Why do people think that a unique name is a name spelled wrong? Or Made up names?
I really dont like people trying to make a name unique by buggering up the spelling, though I think made up names can be ok.

I like unusual names, ones aren't heard all the time, but a few others may have. I think striving for a name to be unique rather than just uncommon is a bit silly, and sometimes lumbers a child with a hard to live with name.

Interestingly, of your list I spell Fionna Fiona and think Tara is quite a common name. Just goes to show its all subjective really, and that while we have our own particular thoughts on the matter, we shouldnt be too dismissive of others points of view.

Here are a few I like,

Achilles, Avarina, Nai, Francis, Pierre, Felicity, Willow, Ruby, Robin, Cassiopeia
Reply:My son's name is Lake. I don't know many Lakes but have heard of many Laken (Laiken.) I have always loved the name.
Reply:Unique names are uncommon; slightly different spellings are simply variations. Generations ago, people spelled names like they sounded if they weren't sure of common usage (it's not like they had "10,000 baby names" books for reference in 14th century, for instance).

Many of these came down to us as the most often-used spellings and so today we consider them the "right" way to spell a name. But there really is no single right way. I've seen contemporary moms choose varied spellings that (to me) are a little too creative, but generations from now they may become quite popular -- who knows?

As for made-up names, they're unique by definition!
Reply:Do NOT spell a normal name wrong. It is a pain for the child. I'm a teacher and have seen some really doozy names. A made-up name is easier as there is no preconceived notion about how it should be spelled.

Bryce is not uncommon. I have a few of them this year.
Reply:Yes, i think unique names are the names that are fairly uncommon. there are lots of johns and adams, but there aren't many parkers (my son's name) or graysons (another boy name i love)

the really elaborate "made up" names are unique too, though.

Reply:I really like unique names and names that are spelled differently. My name is Amy and I've hated it since the 2nd grade. There were four Amy's in my class that year and three of us were spelled Amy. The other was Amie. When I got into high school I started spelling my name Aymie just to be different. I got all kinds of commnets about how people liked the different spelling. My dad told me I should legally change it that way, but I never did because I didnt want to hurt my mother's feelings.

I always told myself that when I had kids I was going to come up with a name that was unique and uncommon. I'm now almost 39 weeks pregnant with my daughter. The name I picked for her is Ashlynn. I had never heard or seen the name Ashlynn before. I made it up from my husband's first name (Ashley) and my middle name (Lynn). Since I've picked the name I have seen it a couple of times, which kind of bumbs me out, but it's still not very common though.
Reply:I like Leland
